Selected startups eligible to collaborate with Nokia and Nokia Bell Labs experts and to receive up to $175,000 in financial support to help grow their businesses and access global markets

Technology startups with innovative and disruptive solutions for the emerging industrial automation era are invited to compete in this year’s Nokia Open Innovation Challenge (NOIC). Winners of this global competition will be provided with up to $175,000 in financial assistance and the opportunity to collaborate with experts from Nokia and Nokia Bell Labs to help grow their businesses and unleash new levels of productivity for the industrial and public sectors.

This year’s NOIC specifically seeks out startups with disruptive ideas in industrial automation categories such as multi-robot collaboration, VR/ AR driven human augmentation for industrial and enterprise use cases, digital personal assistants in enterprises, human machine / machine human communication technologies, edge computing, and artificial intelligence and related technologies.

The competition is organized in partnership with NGP Capital, a global venture capital firm, backed by Nokia. NGP Capital has 14 years of expertise in evaluating, investing, and accelerating promising growth-stage companies from all around the world.

The annual NOIC event offers the opportunity for pioneering startup companies to showcase best-in-class products and solutions within the Industrial Automation domain. This year marks the seventh year of this global competition; the previous year’s winner was Spark Microsystems, a Montreal-based business that manufactures low power wireless transceiver chipsets designed for the Internet of Things (IoT).

Startup businesses that want to enter need to submit their entries by June 30, 2019.  The NOIC competition’s website contains the complete rules and guidelines. Finalists will be brought to a mentoring event this autumn at Nokia Bell Labs in Murray Hill, N.J., where they will meet with leading innovators in Nokia and have access to lab resources to help refine the pitch for their innovations.

The selected finalists will then present their proposals to an international jury at an event located at Nokia’s global headquarters in Espoo, Finland. The selection jury will be chaired by Marcus Weldon and be comprised of leaders from across Nokia, Nokia Bell Labs and NGP Capital.

AUDI AG, BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ericsson, Huawei, Intel, Nokia y Qualcomm Incorporated han anunciado la creación de la Asociación Automovilística 5G (5G Automotive Associación, 5GAA), con el propósito de desarrollar, probar y promocionar soluciones de comunicación, apoyar la estandarización y acelerar la disponibilidad comercial y penetración en el mercado global. El objetivo es responder a las necesidades de movilidad conectada y seguridad vial mediante aplicaciones como conducción autónoma conectada, acceso ubicuo a servicios e integración en ciudades y transporte inteligentes.

La nueva generación de redes móviles 5G y la continua evolución del estándar LTE, el cual incluye la comunicación móvil vehículo-con-todo (cellular vehicle-to-everything, C-V2X), desplazan el foco de la tecnología de la información y comunicación (TIC) hacia Internet de las Cosas y la digitalización de las industrias.

La próxima generación de redes móviles representará una evolución de las redes actuales. Se espera que gestionen volúmenes de datos mucho mayores, permitan la conexión de un mayor número de dispositivos, reduzcan notablemente los periodos de latencia y ofrezcan nuevos niveles de fiabilidad. Entre otros ejemplos, el estándar 5G ofrece un mejor soporte para comunicaciones esenciales para una conducción más segura y también para las comunicaciones vehículo-con-todo y soluciones de movilidad conectada.

Estas nuevas soluciones darán lugar a nuevas oportunidades tecnológicas y de negocio, tanto para el sector de la automoción como para la industria TIC, y los miembros de la asociación colaborarán estrechamente para materializar todo su potencial. La asociación responderá a cuestiones técnicas y regulatorias claves, aprovechando la próxima generación de redes móviles e integrando plataformas de vehículos con soluciones de conectividad, interconexión y computación. Las principales actividades de la asociación incluirán:

• Definir y armonizar los casos de uso, requisitos técnicos y estrategias de implementación.
• Dar apoyo a órganos de estandarización y regulación, así como procesos de certificación y aprobación.
• Responder a requisitos de la tecnología de comunicación vehículo-con-todo, como la conectividad inalámbrica, seguridad, privacidad, autenticación, arquitecturas distribuidas en la nube y más.
• Gestionar proyectos conjuntos de innovación y desarrollo que conduzcan a soluciones integradas, testeo de interoperabilidad, pruebas piloto a gran escala y despliegues de ensayos.

La Asociación Automovilística 5G es una asociación global y está abierta a más miembros procedentes de los sectores automovilístico, TIC o del ecosistema y cadena de valor generales de la automoción y redes de transporte por carretera. Varias empresas han expresado ya su firme apoyo hacia la 5GAA y declarado su intención de formar parte de la misma en un futuro cercano.

Doug Davis, vicepresidente sénior y director general del grupo de Internet de las Cosas de  Intel ha comentado “El liderazgo de Intel en cuanto al desarrollo de tecnología 5G, compromiso a largo plazo con los estándares abiertos, y colaboración con líderes del sector automovilístico acelerará el progreso hacia la adopción del estándar 5G en la automoción y el transporte. La colaboración con otros referentes en sus sectores permitirá asegurar que la red 5G pueda soportar los casos de uso que generen avances en seguridad y servicios para la conducción autónoma, y soluciones para ciudades y transporte inteligentes en todo el mundo”.

Christoph Voigt ha sido elegido presidente de la junta directiva y Dino Flore ha sido nombrado director general de la Asociación.

La asociación apoyará y colaborará estrechamente con iniciativas nacionales y regionales, como el Proyecto Europeo para el Pre-despliegue de la Conducción Conectada y Autónoma (European Connected & Automated Driving Pre-Deployment Project).
