Thin Film Electronics ASA , a global leader in NFC (near field communication) mobile marketing and smart product solutions, today announced that leading Spanish winemaker, Barbadillo, has launched a consumer-focused marketing campaign using Thinfilm’s SpeedTap™ tags and CNECT Brand Analytics SaaS Platform. This national campaign includes 126,000 NFC-enabled ‘smart’ bottles of Castillo de San Diego and is believed to be the largest global deployment of NFC to date within the wine and spirits industry. The connected bottles are being sold through 15 major supermarket chains and superstores, including El Corte Inglés, Carrefour, Hipercor, Alcampo, and Eroski.

Barbadillo’s unique campaign, named ‘Dando en el Blanco’ (which loosely translates to ‘Hitting the Target’), enables the winery to engage directly with consumers, deliver a compelling digital experience, and collect valuable consumer data. Through a customized NFC-enabled neck collar, consumers are instructed to tap bottles of Castillo de San Diego with their smartphone to learn more about the promotion, which offers the chance to win 12 distinct €1,000 prizes. Upon purchasing and opening a bottle, customers can retrieve a unique code printed on the cork and enter it in the field displayed on their smartphone – along with their name and other personal information – to instantly determine if they are a winner. The campaign, which also includes television, online, and outdoor advertising support, was launched on July 17 and will run through August 31. Several winners have already been identified.

SpeedTap tags are thin, flexible labels that integrate with a product’s packaging or label and can be read instantly (without the need of an app), with the tap of an NFC-enabled smartphone or device. Each tag is uniquely identifiable and is virtually impossible to clone. Once tapped, the tag wirelessly communicates with Thinfilm’s cloud-based software platform – CNECT™ – to instantly deliver targeted, relevant content from the brand or manufacturer.

The ‘Dando en el Blanco’ campaign is the second instance Barbadillo has incorporated Thinfilm’s NFC technology in one of its products. In February of 2016, the winery launched its Versos 1891 ultra-premium sherry in bottles that featured Thinfilm’s OpenSense™ NFC tags. The tags, in combination with Thinfilm’s Authenticator App, successfully facilitated product authentication, thwarted counterfeiters, and prevented unauthorized refills. The Versos 1891 NFC initiative was highly successful, and spurred Barbadillo executives to pursue consumer engagement applications with Castillo de San Diego – one of its most successful mass-market products.

“Given the success Barbadillo experienced in using OpenSense tags with Versos 1891, we were eager to explore other ways to deploy the technology,” said Alvaro Alés, Director of Marketing & Communication for Barbadillo. “As a family-owned winery, connecting directly with consumers has always been important to us. Thinfilm’s NFC solution gives us a proven channel through which to easily and effectively accomplish that.”

Castillo de San Diego is produced from the Palomino Fino grape and was first bottled commercially by Barbadillo in 1975. It is currently the most widely-sold white wine in Spain.

“The ‘Dando en el Blanco’ campaign featuring Castillo de San Diego illustrates a compelling use case for NFC mobile marketing – not just in the wine and spirits industry but with other consumer products as well,” said Davor Sutija, CEO of Thinfilm. “Barbadillo is a thought leader in this regard. We are pleased the Versos 1891 project was successful, and are now excited to bring our solution to Spain’s best-selling white wine.”

Lucas will be demonstrating Lucas Move voice picking applications on a range of mobile devices, ruggedized smart watches and wearable accessories this week in Stand Number 8C20 at the IMHX intralogistics trade show.

Lucas Move, featuring Jennifer, is the Lucas mobile application for voice-picking and other warehouse applications. Jennifer is the intelligent voice “agent” that guides users through their tasks using a combination of voice direction, speech recognition, visual user interfaces, and barcode scanning. Lucas Move now also supports the use of RFID and NFC technology within the Jennifer voice-directed workflow, providing new means for asset and item identification, data capture, and location confirmation. NFC has gained wide adoption in mobile payments and other applications, and it is supported on all Android smartphones certified for use with Lucas Move.

“NFC is becoming ubiquitous in everyday life, and it has many powerful uses within the warehouse,” said Andrew Southgate, General Manager of Lucas Systems EMEA. “The technology is supported on all of our certified Android devices, as well as many of the traditional warehouse mobile computers our customers use today with Lucas Move. In that sense, there is no cost to customers to add the technology, and we already see applications where it can make tasks more efficient, ergonomic and easy for users. Not only does this help hourly employees work smarter and better, it also boosts their productivity and accuracy.”

At IMHX, Lucas is also announcing that it has certified additional ruggedized smartphones, tablets and other “smart” accessories for use with Lucas Move, including external RFID and NFC readers and barcode scanners. All of the new devices are available with a range of hardened cases meeting military standards (MIL-STD-810 or greater) for drop/tumble/vibration protection that meet or exceed the protection ratings of other warehouse devices currently used with Lucas Move. The new certified devices are:

The NFC OpenSense tags incorporated into each bottle are specifically designed to thwart counterfeiters, prevent unauthorized refills, and facilitate product authentication.

Dating back to the 19th century and thought to be one of the oldest and rarest sherries on the market today, the exclusive run of “Versos 1891” bottles goes on sale today from Bodegas Barbadillo and a select group of wine merchants across the globe.

The Versos 1891 was originally a gift to Manuel Barbadillo by his father as a christening present in 1891, and was already then described as an old Amontillado. Stored in the humid cellars of Barbadillo in Sanlucar de Barrameda, Andalusia, generations of winemakers from the Barbadillo family, as well as the firm’s coopers and cellar masters, have acted as its custodians while it aged slowly in the balanced conditions required of the finest old sherries.

Each bottle of Versos 1891 will have an NFC OpenSense tag incorporated into the bottle that can distinguish between the product’s “factory sealed” and “opened” states. Using Thinfilm’s custom app and cloud-based platform, the tag can wirelessly transmit authentication data to consumers with the tap of an NFC-enabled smartphone. In addition, each tag is uniquely identifiable and trackable, and cannot be cloned.

“Versos 1891 is the celebration of an extraordinary man, a legendary winery, and a deep-rooted tradition of winemaking,” said Manuel Barbadillo, Chairman of Barbadillo and grandson of Don Manuel. “Given the rarity of this release and its significance to the Barbadillo family, we feel compelled to protect it. Thinfilm’s technology delivers that protection, for our business and our valued consumers.”

In May of 2013, the Institute of Masters of Wine celebrated its 60th Anniversary with a formal tasting of Versos 1891, during which the sherry was acclaimed for its “elegance” and other outstanding qualities.

“It’s gratifying that an emerging Norwegian technology company can deliver value to a centuries-old Spanish winery on such a meaningful initiative,” said Davor Sutija, CEO of Thinfilm. “The Barbadillo brand has a rich history, and we’re delighted that our NFC OpenSense technology is playing a role in protecting that legacy.”

Thinfilm worked closely with Constantia Flexibles, a trusted partner and one of the world’s leading manufacturers of flexible packaging and labels, on incorporating the NFC OpenSense technology within the Versos 1891 bottle. Spear USA Inc., Constantia’s label division and an industry leader within the wine and spirits field, led the integration efforts.

Barbadillo and Thinfilm demonstrated the Versos 1891 connected “smart bottle” at Mobile World Congress 2016, Spain.
