Honeywell has announced the creation of Honeywell Robotics, an advanced technology center of excellence focused on innovating and developing artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision and advanced robotics for use across supply chains.

Based in Pittsburgh, Honeywell Robotics will help shape the warehouse and distribution center of the future, particularly as companies look to automated solutions, software and robotics to deliver increased speed, accuracy and throughput in complex material handling environments.

Consumer expectations have caused a seismic shift in supply chain operations. According to eMarketer, online shopping currently accounts for nearly 15% of total retail sales and is expected to grow to 22% by 2023, representing over $6.5 trillion in sales.

Online purchasing, combined with same- or next-day delivery options, has stressed the labor market to the point of a shortage. Nearly 80% of distribution center operations are still performed manually, according to DHL’s Robotics in Logistics Study. With industry growth outpacing the labor pool by a rate of 6 to 1, this growth is creating significant opportunities to automate supply chains.

The new center of excellence will be led by Joseph Lui, a robotics leader with expertise in digital data, autonomous technologies and the industrial Internet of Things. He previously served as Director of Industrial IoT and Automation Technologies, Robotics for Amazon.

Honeywell also is collaborating with AI researchers at Carnegie Mellon University’s National Robotics Engineering Center to develop breakthrough robotics technologies for distribution centers. The company, through its Honeywell Ventures investment fund, has strategic investments in robotics companies, including Soft Robotics and Attabotics, to help automate complex tasks in dynamic environments to maximize productivity and labor efficiency.

Built on Mobility Edge Platform, the mobile device extends product lifecycle, minimizes vehicle downtime and delivers a lower total cost of ownership.

Honeywell has announced a new vehicle-mounted computer, built for the company’s Mobility Edge Platform, to help forklift operators locate and move products quickly and efficiently throughout distribution centers.

The rugged Thor VM1A vehicle-mounted computer – a refresh of the company’s VM1 and CV41 computers – runs on the Android^TM operating system and features the same smart dock and field-replaceable front touchscreen and keyboard the previous models. This makes servicing or swapping the devices a simple and easy task to minimize downtime.

The mobile computer runs on Honeywell’s Mobility Edge Platform, a unified hardware and software architecture built for Android mobile devices. Devices built on Mobility Edge support multiple versions of Android to provide long-term investment protection by making operating system updates and security fixes a simple and quick process.

“Distribution centers today cannot afford any downtime in their operations. Their forklift operators rely on rugged mobile devices to improve productivity and accuracy without having to move from the driver’s seat,” said Michael Noyes, general manager of Mobility for Honeywell’s Productivity Products business. “We’ve designed the new Thor VM1A to handle the challenges of the modern warehouse. If a forklift is down for maintenance, the device can be easily swapped out and placed on another vehicle so that the operator can be up and running in no time.”

The rugged Thor VM1A is easy to maintain with a field-replaceable front panel and Honeywell’s exclusive SmartDock system to allow for quick exchanges between vehicles without having to touch cabling. This minimizes downtime and reduces the number of spare parts needed to be kept in inventory. In the event of an issue, customers can reduce maintenance costs as technicians can easily repair a damaged touchscreen and keyboard, rather than sending in the entire computer for service.

The mobile computer is compatible with Honeywell Thor^TM accessories, including docks, cables and vehicle mounts, to allow existing customers to deploy the devices without having to make additional hardware investments.

Honeywell has announced a simple cost-effective way for companies to improve productivity and regulatory compliance by connecting their existing inventory of personal protective equipment (PPE) using Honeywell’s cloud-based Safety Suite software and specialized electronic tags.

This new Connected Worker solution uses Honeywell’s ultra-high frequency radio identification (RFID) tags that can be attached to any safety equipment and are designed to withstand the tough conditions characteristic of many commercial work sites. The tags can be scanned directly into Honeywell Safety Suite software, which means equipment can be tracked for usage, maintenance and training, resulting in better, money-saving inventory management decisions and compliance reporting.

When equipment is scanned into Honeywell Safety Suite, safety managers can track and manage their inventory of PPE, making sure it is tested on schedule or repaired or replaced as needed, reducing the frequency of equipment failure or non-compliance. The data pulled from the tag can be compiled automatically into reports, thus eliminating time-consuming manual audits and data logs. The ultra-high frequency RFID tags also enable longer-range scans, helping speed up and simplify scanning of multiple devices and workers.

Honeywell has announced the release of its new high-performance 8670 Wireless Ring Scanner with Bluetooth® technology, a compact, lightweight scanner that fits comfortably on a finger to allow workers to keep both hands free when completing their tasks.

The new scanner uses Bluetooth technology to connect to a range of computing devices such as PCs, laptops, tablets, vehicle-mounted computers, rugged mobile computers and smartphones.

The 8670 Wireless Ring Scanner delivers high-speed decoding, motion tolerance and the ability to decode poor quality or damaged bar codes. The 2D imager can also be used as a 1D scanner and can capture small bar codes in high detail.

Con la solución Vocollect Voice para el mantenimiento y la inspección, Honeywell ha adaptado su tecnología para responder a las necesidades del sector de la aviación:
 

• El sistema dirigido por voz da instrucciones a los técnicos a través de un proceso intuitivo paso a paso, garantizando una documentación precisa y el cumplimiento de las normas pertinentes.
• Permite que los técnicos tengan libres sus ojos y sus manos para poder concentrarse plenamente en sus principales tareas.
• Tareas que antes requerían dos técnicos y un laborioso proceso de introducción manual de datos pueden ser realizados ahora por un solo técnico.

 
Un APU es un pequeño motor de turbina de gas que proporciona energía eléctrica a una aeronave. Dicha energía permite poner en marcha los motores principales y el aire acondicionado, así como suministrar electricidad al avión cuando se encuentra en tierra. El APU permite que los pasajeros se sienten cómodamente mientras esperan el despegue. Además, constituye una fuente de suministro eléctrico principal o auxiliar para los sistemas hidráulicos, ambientales y de cabina durante el vuelo.

El proceso de mantenimiento del APU sigue una serie de etapas concretas. En primer lugar, se lleva a cabo una inspección visual y documentación del estado externo de los contenedores y la maquinaria de transporte. A continuación, se desmonta el APU y se procede a inspeccionar y documentar sus componentes, lo que incluye el registro de los números de las piezas.

Anteriormente, para estas tareas hacían falta dos técnicos que se distribuían el proceso de inspección, evaluación e introducción de información en un ordenador. Por ejemplo, uno leería en voz alta un número de la pieza y el otro introduciría los datos.

“Además de ser muy laboriosas, estas tareas exigían una gran concentración“, afirma Gosau.

La solución Honeywell Vocollect Voice para el mantenimiento y la inspección ofrecía a Lufthansa Technik la posibilidad de evitar la introducción manual de datos sin comprometer la calidad y el cumplimiento de la normativa. Para su proyecto inicial, Honeywell desarrolló una solución personalizada controlada por voz para la inducción e inspección del Pratt & Whitney APS 3200. Con base en la documentación de inspección existente, se definieron más de 1.000 puntos de control en el sistema de voz.

Ahora los técnicos realizan con éxito la inducción y la inspección controladas por voz. En lugar de precisar de dos técnicos, ahora este trabajo lo realiza un solo técnico que utiliza un ordenador portátil Vocollect A730 y unos auriculares inalámbricos SRX2.

El Vocollect A730 es el dispositivo que conecta el servidor con los auriculares. Actúa a modo de “traductor”, convirtiendo las instrucciones en órdenes de voz y devolviendo las respuestas al servidor. Por ejemplo, un diálogo podría ser una pregunta relacionada con el estado externo del APU, como la presencia de signos de deterioro. El técnico elige la respuesta adecuada entre varias opciones predeterminadas, como “Sí” o “No”, y las dice en voz alta. Los auriculares captan su respuesta. A continuación, el A730 la repite para validar que es correcta y garantizar que no se produzcan malentendidos entre el usuario y el sistema.

El proceso que se sigue para obtener la información relativa a los números de las piezas (durante el desmontaje, por ejemplo) es igualmente sencillo. El técnico lee los tres últimos dígitos, el sistema comprueba que los números concuerdan con los almacenados en la base de datos y pasa a la etapa siguiente del proceso global de inspección.

Antes de trabajar con la solución de Honeywell Vocollect para el mantenimiento y la inspección, cada técnico define un perfil de voz para que el sistema pueda reconocerla incluso en condiciones de ruido de fondo. Esto solo debe hacerse una vez y se tarda alrededor de una hora en realizar la tarea.

“La utilización de la tecnología de voz de Vocollect ha simplificado mucho el proceso“, añade Robert Garbas, uno de los cinco mecánicos del equipo de Ole Gosau, que cuenta con amplia experiencia en el montaje y desmontaje de APU.  “A la hora de efectuar la inspección de entrada, tenemos las manos y los ojos libres para trabajar y podemos concentrarnos en la tarea concreta que tengamos que realizar“.

La facilidad de uso ha sido un factor clave para que los técnicos de Lufthansa Technik adoptaran esta solución con gran entusiasmo.  “El equipo solo tardó un día en hacerse con ella“, explica Boy Peter Carstensen, asesor de Lufthansa Industry Solutions, que participó activamente en la introducción de la solución y la creación de interfaces con los sistemas existentes.

“El funcionamiento de la solución ha sido satisfactorio desde el inicio hasta el final del proyecto”, concluye Ole Gosau. “Todo ha mejorado sustancialmente gracias a Vocollect Voice: la calidad del servicio, el cumplimiento de las normas, la productividad, las condiciones de trabajo y la satisfacción de los empleados“. El siguiente paso consiste en integrar la tecnología de voz Vocollect con el sistema SAP que utiliza la compañía. Ole Gosau cree que el sistema se podría aplicar a otros procesos de mantenimiento de APU y, quizá, incluso al mantenimiento de turbinas de gran tamaño.

El proyecto de implantación de la Solución Logística SISLOG ha sido encargado a la multinacional francesa Atos, la cuarta empresa tecnológica del mundo

Celulosas Vascas, uno de los principales importadores y distribuidores de productos de protección personal, higiene  y limpieza desechables de Europa, ha elegido SISLOG Almacén, la solución de logística y almacenamiento de Atos, para la gestión de su almacén central, situado en Amorebieta, y que tiene una superficie de más de 4.000 metros cuadrados.

La empresa vasca, líder en su sector, necesitaba controlar de forma fiable los stocks y las actividades en el almacén en tiempo real, automatizando los procesos internos y mejorando la precisión del inventario. Asimismo, el nuevo sistema debía permitir reducir los costes a través de una correcta rotación de existencias y control de las incidencias.

Entre los beneficios obtenidos, destacan el incremento de la precisión y agilidad en los movimientos de almacén y aumento de la productividad y la eliminación de errores en la preparación de pedidos y un mayor control de la gestión de stocks.

Honeywell adquiere Movilizer, líder en la simplificación de las operaciones para trabajadores móviles

Honeywell ha completado la adquisición de la compañía privada Movilizer, que fue pionera en la creación de una de las primeras plataformas en la nube para aplicaciones de servicios en campo. Los trabajadores de campo usan Movilizer para realizar operaciones de mantenimiento, venta y distribución, y las actividades de almacenamiento fuera de la oficina. Los términos del acuerdo no han sido revelados.

El software en la nube de Movilizer permite a una fuerza distribuida de operarios crear, desplegar y gestionar soluciones de flujo de trabajo – ya sea en el punto de venta, en el campo, en un almacén o centro de distribución. Los clientes pueden capturar sin problemas, transmitir y analizar en su plataforma informática, los datos generados por sus trabajadores, lo que les permite aprovechar el poder de su fuerza de trabajo desde cualquier lugar para servir mejor a las necesidades de sus clientes finales.
